I never tire of classic black and white portraits against a gray background. So I was more than pleased when Lexington's own Bill Bloomfield called me for an actor head shot. Talk about entertaining- this man can come up with endless moods and expressions! It's not easy laughing and clicking the shutter at the same time.

We photograph high school seniors in our studio and in beautiful nearby locations. We've had portraits published in yearbooks for Concord Carlisle High School, Belmont High School, Lexington Christian Academy and even as far away as Equador. Although Lexington High School will not allow its students to use a non-contract photographer (ie. not us) we often have LHS students coming here anyway, requesting a portrait that tells their stories.

Earlier this year, I thought long and hard about how to prepare my
preschool child for a photo shoot in which she'd be dressed in a
makeshift butterfly outfit (some sheer wings and a tulle skirt over a
leotard). In the end, I decided not to do much at all. What I
learned from this experience, and what I know about my own practice of
trying to connect with joy, seems like it would be worth sharing with
others who are thinking of asking a gifted artist like Andy to capture
their child's precious likeness.

Most children are naturally tuned in to the here and now, dwelling in
the present moment with all they've got (this is why it's so hard to
get them to do what you want when they are relishing their current
activity, which more than likely, they've chosen for themselves).
They are skilled at moving deeply into their experience and at
enjoying it with all of their senses: sight, sound, smell, touch, and
taste. In fact, I think the joy in "enjoy" is what keeps them hooked
on the current moment.
Young children exude joy effortlessly, seamlessly. And their joy is
contagious. It's part of what makes them so much fun to be around.

My advice is to help your children connect with their joy, whatever it
is. What are they passionate about? What do they go wild over? We
all have something like this and you probably already know what theirs
is. Once you know your way into your child's joy of being him or
herself, you can invite them into it and sustain their interest by
telling an interactive story during the photo shoot. For example,
does your child adore trucks? Ask him or her to play a great truck
game, which you make up and narrate as you go along: "You're a truck
on a great adventure! You're trying to rescue the little car that ran
out of gas on it's way to _____ " Does your child flip for fairies
like mine does? "You're a butterfly fairy who visits all the flowers
to sprinkle dust that makes them change color. See the color now?
What is it? Can you smell it? Butterfly fairies drink nectar. Are
you thirsty? What's it taste like? ..." You get the idea. And so
will they! Your child might want to take over the narration for
awhile, which is great. The photo shoot will be more engaging for
her, more entertaining for you, and a more authentic expression of her
unique self in this moment, which is something you'll be able to
treasure in all the moments to come.

Giving begins at home

Recently I had the great good fortune to make a new friend- a little girl who wanted to donate her hair to "Locks of Love." Tired of all the bothersome tangles, she wanted a change. Her mom encouraged her to donate the looooong pony tail to charity.

Two photo sessions, one date at the hair salon- and a lot of laughs later - this is what we came up with!

While she may be a little young to completely understand the significance of her

gift, she will no doubt understand more so over time. But for now, what a way to start!

She loves her new hair style and especially having no more tangles! What a wonderful little girl and a wonderful mom.

Lexfun Hay Wagon Rides

Sunshine and pumpkins were plentiful today as members of the Lexfun convened for haywagon rides through the Wilson Farms fields. Preschoolers, some in Halloween costumes, rode the wagon across the farm and toured the imaginatively constructed haystacks. Fortunately for them- the 'scary guy' had the day off. We held a raffle for a gift certificate to The Family Album ~ all proceeds going to Lexfun. Congratulations go out to Wanda, today's lucky winner! We're looking forward to creating some beautiful portraits for you.

Meet Kathy, she's our new framer. She's incredibly talented and a pleasure to work with. Here she is delivering one of our prints to our display case at the Burlington Mall. She took this Iris print with a torn edge effect and float framed it against two shades of gray. It looks fabulous. Next time you're at the mall check it out. Our case is just outside of Macy's.

Here is what Olivia said about her picture of Patty on a map of Martha's Vineyard, where she had spent several weeks earlier in the summer "I chose to put my Pancake Patty in front of the Martha's Vineyard map because even though I am not there right now, Martha's Vineyard is a really fun place to visit!".

Emily sent in two photos of her Pancake Patty. "I wanted a picture of Pancake Patty with my fish because I love Sophie and my fishies, Ruby and Molly." (Sophie is Emily and Olivia's little sister- not the family cat)

"I wanted a picture of Pancake Patty near Edgartown on my Martha's Vineyard map because it is a nice, warm quite place."

Here are the three sisters during their last portrait play date. Each one has her own unique and wonderful personality but one thing they all are is FUNNY!!! My stomach hurt from laughing!!!
